How good is the sound insulation?

Office phone booths and meeting pods can be used to eliminate distractions and increase productivity in the workplace, but this is only achieved if they are actively used. To reach their full potential, pods must be placed close enough to their users. This creates certain requirements especially in terms of sound insulation.
The required level of sound insulation for pods, expressed in practical terms, is that they can be placed right next to workstations in an office and people working outside them will not be able to overhear discussions inside. This is especially important in the case of on-demand use of single-person pods.
ISO 23351-1 is a new standard that can be used to measure the level of pods’ sound insulation as a whole and to produce a single figure, called speech level reduction, which describes the degree of provided speech privacy. A speech level reduction of 30 dB corresponds with the practical requirement of sound insulation mentioned above. With a lower level of sound insulation, pods should be placed further away from people working outside them. You can read more about the new ISO standard here.
In addition to sound insulation, interior acoustics of pods are another factor to take into consideration. Poor interior acoustics make it difficult to hear what’s being said during phone calls and meetings. This also causes users to raise their voices, which creates another problem in terms of privacy.
Reverberation time is typically used to describe the interior acoustics of a space. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to reliably test reverberation time in pods because of their small size. However, the surface area and thickness of absorptive materials inside a pod are good indicators of its acoustics. Also, as with sound insulation, it’s important to test pods in practice and make sure that speech sounds natural inside them.

Where should I place the pod?

We recommend locating our office pods and office phone booths centrally, close to where people are working so it is easy to check whether the pod or phone booth is occupied and is easy to access. You can find more tips in our Placement guide.

How many pods do I need?

We recommend providing one Framery O and Framery One for every 10 employees, one Framery Q for every 20 employees and one Framery 2Q for every 30 employees. As a rule of thumb, the more noise or ad hoc conversations in the work area, the more pods you need.

How are the pods and booths powered?

Framery products can be plugged into a standard wall socket. The pods have their own power adaptors that provide 12 V DC to the fans and 24 V DC to the lights. The lights and fans are operated by a motion detector. Inside the pods, there are country-specific power outlets for charging mobile devices.

How long are the power cables?

In all products, the power cables are led out from the bottom corners of the pods and booths, or out through the ceiling. The cables in Framery O, Q & 2Q are 7 m long and in Framery One 5 m long (the cable length outside the pods is 4.5 m, except for Framery 2Q when the cable is led out from the floor, the length is 3.5 m).

Which electronic components can be changed?

All the electronic components can be changed in the event of a malfunction. Our electrical safety certificate in the USA and Canada requires the electrical unit and the power outlet in our products to be tested together at our factory. This requirement dictates that if one of these components needs replacing, they must both be replaced. This applies only to pods in the USA and Canada. Everywhere else, the electrical unit and the power outlet can be replaced separately. All other components can also be replaced separately.

Do the pods cause any interference with wireless signals (WiFi etc.)?

We have found no evidence that O, Q or 2Q pods interfere with any regular wireless signals.
Framery One’s radio frequency approval measurements are tested according to EU and FCC legislation. The system doesn’t disturb other radio devices.

The ventilation and lightning in the Framery One, Framery O VCR and Framery 2Q can also be adjusted from control panels.

Is it possible to have the Framery O with a right-handed door?

No, Framery O and Framery 2Q are only available with a left-handed door. Making the door right-handed would require significant changes to the pod’s structure.

Can the doors be made self-closing?

In cases where a door closer or a door stopper is required for the Framery O we can offer spring hinges that are self-closing. These hinges are not included in our standard offering and are available only in black or white.
At the moment, there are no self-closing hinges for the Framery Q. If the door of a Framery Q needs to be self-closing, the pod can be installed at a slight angle, so gravity closes the door.
Framery 2Q’s and One’s doors are self-closing as a standard.

Are Framery products eco-efficient?

Yes. Our products are mainly made of birch plywood. All used plywood is produced either in Finland or neighboring countries, and our suppliers are required to have FSC or PEFC certification.
Majority of our materials are recycled or recyclable. The acoustic foam and the interior felt we use in our products are up to 60–70 % recycled. Also, a significant part of all steel, aluminum and glass is recycled in their manufacturing processes.
All Framery pods are highly energy-efficient. When the products are in use, the default power consumption of Framery One is 30 W, Framery O is 13 W, while Framery Q uses 20 W and Framery 2Q 42 W while active.

Are the pods safe in case of an earthquake?

In Framery’s case, seismic requirements are typically related to our products’ ability to stay upright in case of an earthquake. If required, Framery O and Framery Q can be fixed to the floor with anchor bolts using the leveling glide screw holes in the floor modules. Framery 2Q can be fixed to the floor with anchor bolts and seismic brackets. Seismic anchoring is also possible with Framery One. Instructions are available upon request.

Framery One’s interior panel meets ASTM E84: Class A.

Do the pods need sprinklers?

Inspecta, an EU accredited inspection body, has stated that there is no need for installing sprinklers in Framery O, One, Q and 2Q. The statement is based on the following facts:
None of the products exceed the 9 – 12 square meter area covered by a single sprinkler
The products do not contain any easily combustible materials and therefore do not increase the fire load of the surrounding space by hindering the operation of the sprinklers in it. The products can be considered movable furniture instead of building structures that sprinkler requirements are typically set for
Inspecta’s statements for Framery O, One, Q and 2Q are available upon request.
However, our products can be fitted with sprinklers if that is required because of local regulations, but Framery does not provide sprinklers, install them or take responsibility of the installation. Here are instructions for sprinkler installation in Framery O, here for Framery Q and here for Framery 2Q.

How much air flows inside the pods?

Framery One
Total air flow is 29 l/s (104 m³/h)
Total air flow with the optional carbon activated filter is 26 l/s (93,6 m³/h)
Framery O
Total air flow is 21,5 l/s (77,4 m³/h)
Framery Q
Total air flow is 66 l/s (237,6 m³/h)
Previously, we reported the amount of air flow to be significantly lower for both Framery O and Framery Q. This was because the measurements were done using a method that is typically used for measuring air flow in much larger spaces. Currently, we use a method more suitable for our products along with more accurate measuring instruments.
Framery 2Q
Total air flow is 121,1 l/s (256,5 m³/h)

How much noise do the fans make?

The fans do not significantly increase the noise level in a typical open office setting. The fans are on top of the pods, so they are as far away as possible from people working around them. It is possible to minimize the noise the fans make by adjusting their speed, which in turn affects the air flow inside the pods. Also, placing the pods under a low ceiling or a ventilation pipe with a hard surface should be avoided because these structures may increase fan noise by reflecting sound.

How to use pods during COVID-19?

Even with the globally extraordinary circumstances, our production is running normally. We have gathered useful information on how to make people feel safe to return to their workplaces and use their Framery pods mindfully.
